There is no difference. Both spellings are accepted, and mean the same
thing.

Because someone decided to change the wording of the option
(don't ask who or why), and then found out that the old
definition couldn't be dropped because people were relying
on that syntax.

Do you run into some problem because of this, besides the
fact that it is confusing (and I agree) ?

If not, I would worry more about what isn't possible in ASE
then about what can be done in 2 ways :-).

I've personally long wished that the DISK INIT command would
accept both "physname" and "phyname" (which is used as the
name of the corresponding column in sysdevices). 16 years
later, I'm still often getting the two confused both when doing
disk init and when making direct updates to sysdevices. :-{
